We survey more than 200 private equity (PE) managers from firms with $1.9 trillion of assets under management (AUM) about their portfolio performance, decisionmaking and activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Given that PE managers have significant incentives to maximize value, their actions during the current pandemic should indicate what they perceive as being important for both the preservation and creation of value. PE managers believe that 40% of their portfolio companies are moderately negatively affected and 10% are very negatively affected by the pandemic. The private equity managers--both investment and operating partners-- are actively engaged in the operations, governance, and financing in all of their current portfolio companies. These activities are more intensively pursued in those companies that have been more severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result of the pandemic, they expect the performance of their existing funds to decline. They are more pessimistic about that decline than the VCs surveyed in Gompers et al. (2020b). Despite the pandemic, private equity managers are seeking new investments. Relative to the 2012 survey results reported in Gompers, Kaplan, and Mukharlyamov (2016): the PE investors place a greater weight on revenue growth for value creation; they give a larger equity stake to management teams; and, they also appear to target somewhat lower returns.

Not only banking products and credit derivatives, but also institutions such as hedge funds or private equity funds are often believed to have played a significant role during the latest global financial turmoil. In the light of serious economic problems, questions arose whether regulations of these institutions were sufficient or whether the effects of the global crisis could have been smoothed, if regulation and supervision had been stricter. This book analyses the non-bank regulatory framework with particular attention devoted to hedge funds and private equity funds. It describes functioning of the funds, discusses their performance during the global financial crisis and, predominantly, describes and analyses the EU and U.S. regulatory reforms with respect to these institutions, which have arisen as a response to the crisis, namely the AIFM Directive and the Dodd-Frank Act. Based on the analysis of the measures incorporated in these reforms, it outlines a new proposal of the alternative investment fund regulatory framework, which, if applied, would lead to a more efficient functioning of the industry than what is likely to be the outcome of the already adopted reforms.

Im Zuge dieser Umgestaltung wurden alternative Anlagen wie Private Equity, Venture Capital und Hedge Funds für risikofreudige, aber gleichzeitig auch performancebewusste Anleger immer attraktiver. Seit ihren Ursprüngen in kleinen Investment Pools in den 60er und 70er Jahren entwickelten sich Private Equity (PE) und Venture Capital (VC) Finanzierungen zu einer Mainstream Asset-Klasse und werden ein immer bedeutenderer Teil vor allem von institutionellen und in zunehmendem Maße auch von privaten Portfolios. Private Equity ist sowohl begrifflich als auch inhaltlich eine Erweiterung von Venture Capital. Während Venture Capital die Finanzierung von Frühphasenunternehmen beinhaltet, integriert Private Equity zusätzlich Elemente aus benachbarten Finanzierungsarten wie Mezzanine Capital, Buyout Capital oder Restructing Capital. Im Gegensatz zum Public Equity sind PE und VC Finanzierungen zeitlich limitierte Beteiligungen an nicht börsennotierten Unternehmen. Da für nicht an einer Börse gelistete Unternehmensanteile kein Sekundärmarkt existiert, sind die Beteiligungsanteile relativ illiquid und damit langfristig. Für PE und VC Beteiligungen existieren keinerlei Marktpreise und nur vereinzelt Vergleichsmöglichkeiten anhand ähnlicher Transaktionen. Konzepte zur Performancemessung aus anderen Anlagekategorien, wie beispielsweise Aktien, sind deshalb nicht oder nur eingeschränkt anwendbar. Diese Konzepte haben sich seit den grundlegenden Arbeiten von Markowitz, Jensen und Sharp in den 60er Jahren zu einem Standard der kapitalmarkttheoretischen Messung der Aktien-Performance entwickelt. Die Performance ist die Abweichung der Rendite einer Kapitalanlage von einem zugrunde gelegten Benchmark. Für eine Beurteilung des erzielten Erfolges sollte neben der Rendite das dabei eingegangene Risiko, als eine zweite Dimension, Berücksichtigung finden. Erschwert wird ein risikoadjustierter Vergleich des Erfolges durch die Vielzahl unterschiedlichster Methoden zur Rendite- und Risikoquantifizierung. Werden die Probleme der traditionellen Performancemessung von Aktienportfolios um die Kapitalmarkteigenschaften von Private Equity und Venture Capital ergänzt, entsteht eine starke Intransparenz des gesamten Marktes für Beteiligungsfinanzierung.
