This thesis analyzes Sustainability Reporting/Responsible Investing (RI/ESG) activities as well as the corresponding transparency of those initiatives on a sample of European Private Equity funds that are all UN PRI signatories. After providing an introduction to Sustainability, Responsibility, UN PRI and Private Equity, a qualitative analysis of 24 Private Equity funds and their Sustainability Reporting/UN PRI Reporting is conducted based on an own developed framework focusing on the following three aspects: reporting, transparency, and content. For this, the most recent available 2014/2015 UN PRI reports were used, as well as further proprietary information from the Private Equity funds. Afterwards, a cross-analysis was conducted in order to find parallels and differences, and extract best-in-class examples from the funds as well as examples with potential for improvement. Generally, the analysis showed that there is already a high degree of institutionalization within the (Sustainability) Reporting process, while the degree of transparency differs from fund to fund, and, especially, there is much room for improvement in the kind and amount of information that is provided to the public (which are considered stakeholders, too) compared to that of investors. Overall, the analyzed sample showed good results concerning Sustainability Reporting/Responsible Investing. It will be interesting to observe the future developments in this field, including the corresponding regulatory environment, as well as whether Sustainability Reporting/Responsible investing processes could become mandatory for private companies (and or Private Equity funds).
