This thesis analyzes the strategic involvement of private equity managers in their portfolio companies. The private equity industry has gained a considerable momentum in recent years as influential force in financial markets but also as economic driver. The strategy work done by investment professionals is thereby considered one of the main value adding and differentiating factors of successful private equity investments. This study develops an integrated role-profile of the private equity manager as strategist by defining the repertoire of practices that are strategically consequential toward portfolio companies. The strategy practitioner is conceptualized by following a Strategy as Practice research perspective, which reflects the practice turn in strategy theory. Strategy practices can be attributed to four roles of an investment professional: Strategy advisor, provider of business contacts, financier and sounding board. The research findings, obtained via literature review and case study method, identified the most relevant strategy practices toward portfolio companies in post-investment involvement to be the development of business strategy, monitoring of financial and operating performance, replacement and recruitment of directors and control over the distribution of investment capital. The study further observes how institutional elements of the private equity industry, based on historical evolvement and current trends, influence this involvement. The institutional theory thereby offers the theoretical framework to describe the empirical field within which the private equity manager acts.
