The thesis illustrates the relationship between private equity investment performance/investment volume and economic industry states. Changes in accounting items of public companies are used to approximate industry characteristics. We provide a detailed analysis of which accounting items are significant predictors of changes in private equity performance and volume. It is shown, for instance, that five accounting items are significant predictors of private equity volume in all industries we examined. The empirical research is based on a comprehensive and unique sample of private equity fund performance and volume data. The sample covers all available data both on venture capital and buyout activity worldwide in the years from 1980 to 2002.
